The Spirit in the Sky

There is a song. “Spirit In the Sky.” It exemplifies something a lot of so-called Christian’s miss about the gospel. There was no New Testament when Jesus did His thing. There was the Torah, the Law, Prophets and so on and so forth, but Jesus was the Living Word, the final edit. And He knew He was dealing with us, so he kept it simple. He would even discuss with those around Him to clarify the point when needed. And a lot of what he spoke of was how to deal with it. It being life. What you were stuck with. There is a very Mexican saying. It is like this, it is like that, but the concept of changing this or that never comes up. You can’t change life. Life changes you!

You have very little chance of changing the way life is. Oh, you can read some self help book but the concepts soon fall away and there you are! The same old same old. Only you’re a little more depressed because now your short the $9.99 you spent for that stupid book at Sam’s Club. The book was never meant to work. That’s why you found it at Sam’s Club between the ladies’ lingerie and the slow cookers. Next time buy one of my books. They’re on sale.

One thing you’ll always find is a Bible. King James, New International, all versions of God’s word. Old and New Testament, sometimes with a concordance to further compound what little grasp you may have on scripture. And though you may find some glimmer of faith you will never find the answer. You will never find it in any book. God is bigger than a book.

The best thing a Bible is good for is to provide authentication for a lackadaisical sermon some tired old man is trying to sell you on Sunday morning. Most times out of context. So, where’s the beef? We have to ask about faith, belief and the meaning of life. You can’t arrive at any of these by reason no matter how hard you try. And you can’t find it in a book. You can only find this when you understand that God is not a concept. He is real.

That is the incomprehensible fact that eludes the theologians. They believe in God so long as He knows His place which is wherever their Bible puts him. And they believe by faith. Faith is a fickle thing. Mormons have faith. As do Muslims, Methodists and BaHai. And have any of them found faith? You tell me. This is why watching religious debates are ludicrous. Each party retreating to their various holy books which only they accept and proving nothing more than all of them need to go to stand up comedy.

What is truth? Truth is whatever you believe at any particular time. Facts are indisputable. And the fact of God is somewhere else. The Kingdom of God is within you. Always has been. That inner understanding of right and wrong. The uneasy feeling when you cross that line. That self hate you feel when you condemn yourself, and the self satisfaction when you face up. And all these things are bit and parcel of that thing we call life!

Being open to Jesus is far better than any seminar, sermon, or Sunday School. Though these may reinforce what you have inside they can’t teach you anything. You will learn more from that little voice within you than you will ever learn from the steeped language or fragmented translations you pour over hoping for some revelation, anything to cure life. There is no cure for life. It is fatal.

So, how do you know that it is really Jesus that you are following without the expert guidance of some cackle babble head in a pulpit advising you? You can tell because Jesus’ words stick! Did you ever notice that some things that “pop” in your head stick while some you can’t remember five minutes from now? Those things came from outside your head. That tiny little piece that speaks volumes. These things you can’t learn. You just know! No magic mantras or ancient words of wisdom, just a simple fact that soothes your soul and makes your journey of life just a wee bit easier. A sudden realization that had been there all along. You could have seen it had you only looked.

This voice will never lead you astray. It was specifically designed for you. You will accept your predicament. It won’t make you rich in a worldly way but accepting life is the first step of true wealth. True wealth is making do on what you have and if you can be happy with that you will be happy forever listening to that spirit in the sky.
