To The Killeen TX School Board
To the KISD School Board:
You have failed the children and the parents of Killeen! The very idea that a student under your care lost her life is unimaginable. But the blame does not lie with the children involved. They are victims of the scholastic social structure that you allowed and endorsed by your apathy.
Children are not born with such behavior, they learn it. The necessity to carry a weapon to avoid bullying is the Wild Wild West. A school should be an environment of enrichment, not a channel for lawlessness. But it isn’t just in Killeen. A fine young man was lost in Austin. Same scenario; disagreement, a knife, a death. Kids of the Alpha generation do not know racism. They learn it. Already, comments are floating up pointing out that the two boys involved were of different races. Same problem. The killer felt obligated to carry a knife. He was an exceptional young man. And during a common disagreement he killed another exceptional young man and now neither one will make us proud on the gridiron.
The kids in KISD live in this world every day that you created. You stand guilty because of your apathy. In his defense before Parliament, Thomas More explained that the one who observes an offense and does nothing, is as guilty as the perpetrator, convicted by their lack of action! You, KISD, stand guilty!
I have learned that the City Council has no direct control over your actions. You, who hold the lives of our children in your hands do not answer to the elected officials. I understand that you are elected too. “Texas school districts and charters are overseen by school boards. The boards of independent school districts are elected by the citizens of their communities, while the boards of charter schools are appointed.”
My problem is, due to your obvious lack of concern about school safety what happens if a city council member has the same issue? They have no authority to bring that before the council. Are the police bound by the same situation?
We all got your phone message citing an upgrade of security at the schools. We noticed yesterday that doors were mostly unlocked and metal detectors were off! Backpacks only got bigger. I myself, when dropping my granddaughter off in the morning can pick out the little pockets of “commerce” and you know what I’m talking about!
I understand that you can’t be everywhere all the time but a fight, in a hallway, with kids recording on their cell phones which I think they need, but under your existing rule you made so much noise about . . . where were their faraday bags?
Let’s start simple, shall we? Pick up all the guns and knives. And why wasn’t a cop all over that fight? Your schools are wildly out of control. I have solutions but you won’t like them. However, be aware; I’m not the only one, and not the most notable.
