Katherine Ferruzzo
π️ Honoring the life of Camp Mystic counselor Katherine Ferruzzo π️
Her obituary is beautifully written. A link to donate to her legacy foundation is in the comments.
Although the youngest in the family, Katherine was mighty. From the very beginning, she had a larger-than-life personality and a voice that demanded to be heard — even before she had the words to express it. At two years old, she invented her own language — a unique form of baby talk entirely her own. Later, Katherine attended The Parish School to address her speech issues, where she not only found her voice but also discovered her calling. It was there that her deep compassion for others took root, especially for those with special needs and learning differences. This experience inspired her lifelong dedication to the field of Special Education.
In May, Katherine graduated from Memorial High School in Houston. There, Katherine embraced all aspects of high school life, and she stood out as a student and a friend. As a member of the Future Teachers Program in SBISD, Katherine served children with autism in the APPLE program, assisting a beloved Camp Mystic alum for two years at Frostwood Elementary. She also served as chapter president of the Texas Association of Future Educators at Memorial. Katherine was a member of Student Council for four years, serving on the Executive Board her junior and senior years. She was a member of the National Honor Society and English National Honor Society. Thanks to her contagious spirit, Katherine was selected to lead the senior girls spirit organization as “Head Babe.” It will come as no surprise to those who knew her, Katherine was also named “Life of the Party” by her Class of 2025 classmates.
Katherine and her mom, Andrea, were involved members of the Memorial chapter of National Charity League, where they spent countless hours volunteering. Not surprisingly, Katherine devoted her countless volunteer hours to organizations serving the special needs community. She volunteered at The Center for Pursuit, The Miracle League, Gigi’s Playhouse, The Parish School, The Briarwood School, and Infinite Elevations. Katherine’s dedication to volunteering earned her the Presidential Volunteer Service Award (given by the US president) 3 years in a row.
Katherine was thrilled to have been accepted to The University of Texas at Austin for the fall. She was to be a Special Education major and ultimately planned to become a special education teacher. Having been raised a diehard Longhorn by her parents, both of whom are UT alums themselves, Katherine was excited to follow in her family’s footsteps. She was looking forward to living at Hardin House (just like her mom had) and going through sorority recruitment in August. Always the life of the party, Katherine was ready to join her brother Vincent at SAE tailgates and late-nights and to cheer on her beloved Longhorns at Saturday football games. Her oldest brother, Jack, also a UT alum, said it best: “Nobody wanted to be a Longhorn more than she did.”
Katherine’s “happy place” was Camp Mystic in Hunt, Texas. It was the place she longed to be and where she thrived most. A Mystic camper from 2015 to 2024, Katherine was a proud member of the Kiowa tribe. She was chosen as the junior assistant in 2018 and the James Eastland Cup Girl in 2020. Katherine was also chosen to compete in the Advanced War Canoe. She earned her “M”, making her an M girl, which is a huge honor. Katherine was especially proud to be elected as Kiowa Tribe Captain in the summer of 2024. She considered this her biggest accomplishment in life, that is, until she was accepted to The University of Texas.
Having been the first to submit her application, Katherine was thrilled to return to Mystic this summer as a first-time counselor. She was eager to give back to the place that gave her so much. Katherine was a counselor for the Bubble Inn cabin. We have no doubt that, alongside friend and co-counselor Chloe Childress, Katherine gave those sweet girls the best camp experience imaginable during their time together.
Katherine was an absolute force to be reckoned with — a firecracker who was filled with energy and spunk. She had an infectious personality, and she lit up every room she walked into. She was insanely funny and loved to make people laugh and entertain them with silly videos. She was tough. Having two older brothers, Katherine was constantly roughhousing and could certainly hang with the boys. However, she was also a girly girl with a love for fashion and the color pink. Katherine loved her friends fiercely and never met a stranger. She was ready to celebrate every occasion and do “all the things.” In June, Katherine and her best friends enjoyed a fabulous European adventure where she went skydiving in Switzerland and proudly threw up her “horns” on the descent. She repeatedly thanked her dad for “the trip of a lifetime.”
Katherine was lost to us on the 4th of July 2025, when Camp Mystic and the surrounding area of Central Texas were impacted by a devastating flood. Katherine was a hero who sacrificed her own life to try to save the lives of her Bubble Inn campers. We have no doubt her Christian faith strengthened her to the end. Her Bible, which was found at Camp Mystic, highlighted Revelation 21:4: “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
Katherine profoundly touched the lives of so many: the special needs students she taught, her friends, teachers, and classmates; and the campers, counselors, staff, and owners of Camp Mystic. But mostly, she touched the lives of her immediate family. Her fierce and loving spirit will forever live on in them.
The Katherine Ferruzzo Legacy Foundation has been established in her honor – a lasting tribute to her life, her values, and the people she loves most. A central focus will be supporting children, especially those with special needs, because helping them thrive was something Katherine was wholeheartedly committed to.
