Faith and the Jabberwocky
by Wilbur Witt
Jesus said unto him, “Thomas, because thou hast seen Me, thou hast believed. Blessed are they that have not seen and yet have believed.”
No one can define faith. Great doctors has searched for consciousness. Great theologians have likewise combed the Bible and all manner of writings for the substance of faith and have never defined it. So the churches tell their congregations what faith feels like. From the LDS missionary embarking on mission to the little girl coming up out of the baptismal fountain, they all have “faith,”but none of them can put their finger on what faith is! And that’s the way God wants it.
If you cannot explain what you feel now, how will you accept what you find after your last heartbreak? If there is an “other side,” do you think that it operates by the same rules as our three dimensions here? You can accept that physical laws may be different on planets in our own solar system, yet are deaf to the glorified body Jesus told you about. But the universal rules apply.
Why do we sin? We sin because sinning’s fun! The lure of the vamp is within us all. Paul reminds us “15 I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.16 And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good.” That reptilian part of your brain, your own personal snake forever whispers in your ear and more often than not you will taste forbidden fruit. Your brain stem is satisfied, but never sedated. So you turn out outside sources for a remedy, but there can be no cure for who you are. You must live with it and master it. And you will forever wrestle with it. And you will feel bad when it wins. That’s called a conscience. You’re supposed to feel bad. It all depends on what you fill your “God Hole” with. There will always be tares. There will always be temptation.
But, you know the truth, and the truth will set you free . . . for a little while. Until the next time. And there will be a next time. There always is. Jesus said that sin begins with a thought. The eyes perceive, the brain processes, the intellect schemes and the manager of Motel 6 hands you a key. And you’re back in the confessional, therapist’s office, or bar, looking for absolution, but verily verily I say unto you that you will absolutely be a human being until after that last heartbeat. And then you will know what faith is because you, like everyone else will be standing in that great checkout line in the sky hoping you have enough on your debit card. You may need a loan or a co-signer. He’s right over there at the Bank of Forgiveness. He can cancel your debt. Will you sign today, or continue to argue about faith?
