After Years of Being Nothing They’re all Looking Right at You

The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

Humility is not something you learn. It’s something you are! Whenever you are looking down on someone always look up to see who’s looking down on you. Professing humility is easy. Being humble is a bit harder.

People are afraid of humility because they think without the loud voice they will not be heard. The loudest voice is always your own because that voice comes from ego. Who you imagine you are. And if you can just drown out all the other voices perhaps your voice will prevail. And everyone in the room thinks the same thing.

46 An argument started among the disciples as to which of them would be the greatest.47 Jesus, knowing their thoughts, took a little child and had him stand beside him.48 Then he said to them, “Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. For it is the one who is least among you all who is the greatest.”

When I finish an article I am happy. It’s therapeutic to me. I can articulate words and explain my mind. Mostly I’m explaining me to myself. You don’t have to be crazy to do that but it sure helps. Then will come people telling me how good I am. I’m not good. I’m just a wordsmith. I rearrange words. I’m and old songwriter, and I’m no good at that either but I can play that rock and roll, and I can make what I write smooth enough so as to be understood. But I am susceptible to pride. You can never live up to pride. It’s always way up there and you’re always way down here.

The Lord gathers and the Devil scatters. Scattering happens when you begin to lose pieces. When you puff up with pride you begin to fall to pieces. And in the end there is nothing left. So is the ups and downs of life. I have written the best when in the depths of despair. Only when you have walked through the valley of the shadow can you fully appreciate the light of understanding. A thought, word, or simple phrase.

Then one night in some empty room

Where no curtain ever hung

Like a miracle some golden words

Roll off of someone’s tongue.

There was a little girl. Plain, thin, just like every other little girl. Then one day she got to do a small part in a movie. She’d never done that before. She studied her lines. Took direction and did her part. To those on the film crew she was just a little girl. As I watched from the rear I too was unimpressed, but when I turned and saw the monitor her face had shown a light. And I was humbled. I was looking at a star! What was that water on my face? It wasn’t raining.

And after years of being nothing

They’re all looking right at you

And for a while you’ll go in style

Down 16th
